For Immediate Release: Christian Council Expresses Concern Over Vetting Chaos In Parliament
CCG
February 3, 2025
The Christian Council of Ghana has noted with grave concern the incident that happened during the vetting of ministerial nominees in Parliament on Thursday January 30, 2025. Whilst we commend the Appointment Committee for its cooperation with the Executive Arm of Government for the expedited vetting of ministerial nominees so far, we wish to register our utmost abhorrence of the violent scenes we saw during the aborted vetting of Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa and Hon Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, leading to the destruction of public property and abrupt ending of the vetting proceedings.
The CCG acknowledges that our Honourable Members of Parliament have constitutional privileges and immunities aimed at shielding them from encumbrances that may militate against the smooth conduct of their constitutional duties. We are also aware that Parliamentarians are masters of their own rules. However, the CCG is of the strong view that privileges and rights must be balanced by a civic and constitutional duty to maintain the dignity and integrity of public office such as the high office of Parliament. We therefore strongly condemn the use of violent confrontations and agitations in our national political engagements and discourses, such as what happened in Parliament last night. These negative incidents do not only undermine the rule of law and ethical governance principles, but also foster a negative mindset in the way we conduct our national politics.
What happened last Thursday at the Appointment Committee’s sitting is once again highly regrettable and should not recur in Parliament nor be seen at any sphere of our national politics and governance. The CCG wants to reiterate that nation-building is a collective responsibility of all countrymen and women. We therefore welcome the unqualified apology rendered by the Appointment Committee through its Chairman, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, during the outset of the Committee’s sitting on Friday January 31, 2025. Moving forward, we must eschew the use of violent, unconstitutional, unethical and illegitimate means to resolve any impasse in our nation-building strides.
We also urge all key stakeholders in our all-encompassing national governance to work concertedly to deepen and consolidate our democratic tenets.
The CCG thus calls on the Office of the Speaker of Parliament, the Majority and Minority Caucuses to sustain demonstratable commitment to consensus-building throughout the lifespan of the 9th Parliament. We must collectively work towards the mindset that promotes good stewardship of all national assets or resources for the benefit of both current and future generations.
God bless our homeland Ghana and make us great and strong.
